One of the questions we hear most often is:
“What’s wrong with a good-quality kibble?”
It’s a fair question. Many premium kibbles contain better ingredients than older commercial diets, but from a holistic perspective the more important question is whether dry food resembles what the feline body was actually designed to eat.
Cats are obligate carnivores. Their metabolism, hydration system, teeth, digestive enzymes, nutrient pathways, and even their hunting instincts evolved to consume fresh, moisture-rich animal prey. Understanding that biological blueprint changes how we look at nutrition.
A Body Functions Best When It Receives the Fuel It Was Designed For
Nature refined the feline body over millions of years. Wild cats thrive on prey because that is the fuel their bodies evolved to process.
Imagine filling a Ferrari with lawnmower fuel. It might run, but not as well or for as long. That is the comparison we often make. Fresh, species-appropriate food is the Ferrari fuel. Kibble is not.
Moisture: The Most Overlooked Nutrient
Wild prey contains roughly 70–75% moisture. Most kibble contains only 6–10%.
Cats are not naturally driven to drink large amounts of water. They evolved to obtain most of their hydration from food and often prefer moving water rather than still water.
Over many years, a consistently dry diet may contribute to chronically concentrated urine, increased kidney workload, urinary crystal formation in susceptible cats, and reduced hydration. Kidney disease remains one of the most common illnesses affecting aging domestic cats, and many holistic practitioners believe lifelong moisture intake plays an important role in supporting kidney health.
Carbohydrates: Fuel the Cat Never Asked For
Cats have no known dietary requirement for carbohydrates. Yet kibble relies on starches to hold its shape.
Higher carbohydrate intake may contribute to obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, chronic inflammation, and fatty liver disease in some cats. A cat’s metabolism simply evolved for animal protein and fat—not starch-heavy diets.
Ultra-Processing Changes Food
Kibble undergoes rendering, high-heat extrusion, drying, stabilization, and flavor enhancement. Heat processing reduces naturally occurring nutrients, which manufacturers replace with supplemental vitamins and minerals.
Those added nutrients help meet nutritional standards, but holistic practitioners generally prefer nutrition from minimally processed whole foods whenever possible.
Does Kibble Really Clean Teeth?
Cats evolved to slice meat, tear tissue, and crush small bones. Kibble typically fractures immediately when bitten and does little to mechanically clean teeth. Carbohydrates may even contribute to plaque formation.
Many holistic veterinarians believe appropriately sized raw meaty bones, when fed safely, provide more natural dental maintenance.
The Forgotten Ecosystem: The Gut Microbiome
Fresh prey naturally supplies enzymes, collagen, connective tissue, organ meats, bone marrow, and biological diversity that processed foods cannot fully replicate.
Many holistic practitioners believe a healthy microbiome supports digestion, immune function, skin health, and overall resilience.
Why Do Cats Love Kibble?
Commercial kibble is often coated with animal digest, fats, and flavor compounds to make it highly palatable. Taste alone does not necessarily reflect what is biologically ideal.
Many cats transition successfully to fresh food with patience and gradual change.
Two Different Perspectives
Conventional nutrition often asks whether a food meets nutritional requirements.
Holistic nutrition asks whether the food resembles what the species evolved to eat.
Neither perspective comes from a lack of caring, but our philosophy at HolistiCats is grounded in evolutionary biology and fresh, species-appropriate nutrition.
Real Life Isn't Always Perfect
Fresh food is our first choice, but life happens.
For travel or busy days, we recommend freeze-dried or air-dried raw foods such as Stella & Chewy’s, Primal, Northwest Naturals, Vital Essentials, Instinct Raw Freeze-Dried, and Ziwi Peak.
If kibble must be used briefly, Orijen or Acana are among the better options available, though we still encourage adding moisture through fountains, multiple water stations, or rehydrated foods whenever possible.
Vital Essentials Raw Kibble is the only kibble-style product we generally feel comfortable recommending because it more closely reflects a raw-food philosophy.
